Chamber music is not a field readily associated with fast-moving progress, but the rise of the Schidlof Quartet has been one story to buck that trend. With the release of three works by Shostakovich, the ensemble further enhance their reputation. This package provides few new insights into the composer's mind but rarely fails to excite. The fourth quartet just shades it as the highlight of the album, this is music which will repay every listening you ever give it. Crystal clear playing with an almost clinical edge puts this release firmly in the recommended bracket and with Ian Brown joining for the G minor Piano Quintet, no buyer will be dissapointed.
