stalowo-brązowy głos! MAGNETYCZNY!
To be fair, the impressions that the listener forms of this album are colored by the fact that bop-oriented jazz vocalists, both male and female, are a dime a dozen these days — it takes a lot to stand out from the pack. Unfortunately, in this recording Luqman Hamza does little to distinguish himself. The opening track "Born to be Blue" sets things off on the right foot with its mellow subtlety, but he does not seem to be able to rise above what seems by the end of the album to be a sub-par Nat King Cole impression. His voice lacks the caramel fullness that distinguishes the best classic jazz vocalists; also lacking are the technical mastery and innovation of someone like Kurt Elling. Better songs on the album include "Feeling Good," which features sweet flute lines to compliment Hamza's tenor, and the swinging "Weaver of Dreams." — Stacia Proefrock Luqman Hamza, a former singer with the Inkspots turned to jazz in the 60sand 70s with a soulful ballad style that recalls the sounds of Nat King Cole, Charles Brown and Johnny Hartman. Performances include Laura, BlueMoon, My Funny Valentine, Born To Be Blue, Smoke Gets In My Eyes etc. Indie Nominee (Best Jazz Vocal CD 2000) Association For Independent Music (AFIM) Edycja winylowa zawiera płytę LP HQ-180G oraz bonus - płytę LP HQ-180G 45 rpm W nagraniu udział wzięli: Luqman Hamza, vocals and piano; Sonny Kenner, guitar; Kim Park, alto sax and flute; Tyrone Clark, bass; Tommy Rushkin, drums; Gerald Spait, bass; Todd Strait, drums; Ahmad Alaadeen, tenor sax.
