Dunphy 5.0 out of 5 starsWorthy Recording of a Neglected Masterpiece April 21, 2018 In 1975, while studying in Rome, I saw this opera at the Teatro dell'Opera with Ilva Ligabue and Ruggero Bondino and was instantly captivated by it. It thrills me everytime I hear it. Ligabue has a voice not unlike Magda Olivero (a major exponent of the role of Francesca). She is well matched by Bondino and Protti (Giangiacomo Guelfi was the Gianciotto in my production). Fortunately, the recording captures all the nuances which are so important in this opera. There are small details which need to be heard for it to be effective. It always surprises me that no complete studio recording has ever been made since the 1952 Cetra recording with Guarnieri...this opera certainly deserves it!
