The piano played an important role throughout the life of Shostakovich: for this instrument he wrote 24 Preludes and Fugues, two Sonatas, the various cycles of Preludes Op. 34, Fantastic Dances, Aphorisms, in addition to works for two pianos and piano four hands; this instrument, moreover, appears in many chamber works, two Trios, numerous song cycles and also in some symphonic works. In this CD dedicated to his piano output, some of the typical traits of this great composer's style emerge: the humour, grotesque harmonies, lively rhythms and modulations, and daring virtuosity. A fascinating journey through the music of one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.
