DELICATESSEN – everyone walking the city streets of New York has laid his eyes upon this word. A „delicatessen“ typically sells sliced meats, smoked fish, vegetable salads, hard-crusted rye bread... Everything you need to compose a meal out of the ordinary. TRADITION & MODERNE from Bremen/Germany deals in music out of the ordinary and has been doing this passionately since it was founded in 1992. The menu is composed from various stylings of folk, blues, jazz, pop and world music. Music that doesn’t go out of date quickly. At TRADITION & MODERNE personal taste usually decides about what to put out. The result is a fascinating mix of sounds that still has one thing in common: this is music made by artists that have a true love of musical traditions but are also firmly grounded in the present. It‘s a fascinating group of artists that is working with the label, brought together by the conviction that quality is the only way to go. With DELICATESSEN, the people at T & M present a musical calling card that’s highly entertaining. The record provides a colorful and representative overview about some of the label’s most interesting releases and artists: Taj Mahal, Tri-Continental, Mary Coughlan, Holly Cole, Lester Quitzau, Geoff Muldaur, Ellen McIlwaine and Freddie Roulette. TAJ MAHAL For a number of years this American blues legend has been working with T & M. He may be solo, performing with a trio or with his Hula Blues Band – T & M have been documenting many of the man’s recent activities. On this record, Mahal is represented twice: in a Hawaiian and in a trio setting. HOLLY COLE The acclaimed jazz/pop chanteuse from Toronto/Canada belongs among the most fascinating interpreters of song today. She is a T & M discovery, who has been coming to Europe regularly ever since she debuted in Bremen some years ago. One of the most versatile and moving voices to have emerged in recent years, Holly Cole still goes from strength to strength. Many may wish to be as good as her, just a few actually are. MARY COUGHLAN Another singer who can not be mistaken for anyone else. Nobody really sings like this woman from the west coast of Ireland and probably no one has lived a life like hers. Today, after many personal setbacks and downfalls, Mary Coughlan is back again and performing better than ever. TRI-CONTINENTAL Madagascar Slim, Bill Bourne, Lester Quitzau – three different names but one distinctive sound. These three guitarists and singer-songwriters from Canada also have been making a name for themselves since they have been working with T & M. Their debut release received rave reviews and their stunning live performances have become a staple on the European club and festival circuit. LESTER QUITZAU The man from Edmonton is a strong contender for best new player in what could be termed a „post-Ry Cooder“ category. He’s been receiving a number of awards for his solo efforts in Canada already. Soulful roots music with an irresistable groove. GEOFF MULDAUR When this great American singer came back to the music world after a long self-imposed exile, no one really expected it. When Muldaur went out to perform again as well, audiences were spellbound by a fantastic folk/blues/jazz artist who works with a rare kind of intensity. This comeback was documented by a live album on T & M ELLEN McILWAINE Along with Bonnie Raitt and Rory Block, this temperamental singer and guitar-player is a member of the select group of white blues women who made themselves a name on the East Coast blues scene of the early Seventies. Even if she has disappeared for a number of years in the meantime – today Ellen McIlwaine is back, playing and singing with gusto and conviction. FREDDIE ROULETTE Another example of a roots musician who has developed a one-of-a-kind sound. Playing the lap steel slide guitar, Freddie Roulette is a first-rate original, crossing the borders of standard blues stylings again and again and fusing rock, blues, soul, country and jazz stylings – a true original. DELICATESSEN is T & M‘s musical calling card. An invitation to discover one of Germany’s most interesting roots music labels featuring a very entertaining musical mix of many different tastes and flavors
