At the time when this album was recorded in the Black Forest for MPS, the notion of so-called ‘world music' was not bandied around it as it has been over the past years. Born in Tel Aviv, the Bulgarian Rimona Francis lives in New York, and sings and plays the piano with musicians from the USA and Central Europe. And what comes out of this cosmopolitan mixture can rightly be called 'music from the continents'. But it doesn't stop there! Rimona Francis is equally at home in both rock and classical music, as is demonstrated by projects with Miroslav Vitous’ "Majestic Music", and Wolfgang Dauner and a symphony orchestra. The tricky 11/8 rhythm of "Bulgarian Beans" is founded on Macedonian and Bulgarian musical traditions, as is "Five And Nine" which also provides ample proof of Rimona Francis's fantastic feeling for the ballad. Her and Jasper van't Hof’s spontaneous duo improvisations, recorded at the Avant-garde Festival in Donaueschingen, are full of humour and hidden irony. We can count our blessings that the producer had the insight to include the live version on the album. Rimona Francis’s maxim that she never wanted to restrict herself or allow herself to be restricted to one music style, and her talent for combining the saxophone sound of, for example, Paul Desmond or Sonny Stitt with Ella Fitzgerald’s or Sarah Vaughan's vocalization without merely imitating their 'black sound' certainly furthered her career. This album on the MPS label documents the impressive start to a world career.
