At the time of this recording in September 1954, the voice was still fresh and youthful, but Callas's legendary interpretative powers were already fully formed. Her versatility is amazing, the sheer power of her singing is overwhelming to the listener. A close colleague of many years, Tullio Serafin, conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra with great flair and insight, and the recording engineers captured a rare musical occasion with finesse and skill. Testament's new LP transfer brings back the original atmosphere and immediacy of the recording with striking success.
