The suite Dalecarlian Reflections is based on seven traditional melodies that have influenced Nils Lindberg over the years and that all have a historical background. The last part of the suite, Wedding Tune from Mockfjärd, for instance, is based on a traditional melody that used to be played at weddings in olden times. Nils Lindberg wrote the suite with the DalaSinfoniettan in mind and as a result of their earlier successful collaboration with the piece Mythological Portraits. In 2007 the Dala- Sinfoniettan and Bjarte Engeset gave the first performance of Dalecarlian Reflections. The suite Mythological Portraits was written for soprano saxophone player Anders Paulsson who, together with DalaSinfoniettan, premièred it in 2005. The suite is based on myths and tales heard by Nils Lindberg when he was a child. In the folkloric tradition of Gagnef there are three mythological creatures: Tömpkal, Randa and Fösskal. Legend has it that Tömpkal is a deceased spirit; others say he is a domestic spirit taking care of the household. If Tömpkal is happy, all is fine; the crop is good, the cattle are thriving and the horses are taken care of. Randa is bad and seductive as well as nice and helpful. Fösskal lives in streams with the roaring falls. He shows himself at night and plays strange tones on his fiddle. In many of his pieces Nils Lindberg has used improvisational parts but the solo part in Mythological Portraits is notated. In this piece he did not use traditional folk melodies to the same extent as he would later do in Dalecarlian Reflections. However, there are some traces of traditional music in the prologue, as well as in the section called Tömpkal and in the epilogue. In 2006 Nils Lindberg received H.M. the King´s medal, Litteris et artibus, for his artistic contributions as a composer and a pianist. Anders Paulsson, soprano saxophone. Dalasinfoniettan; Östgöta Blåsarsymfoniker Bjarte Engeset.
