These were pioneering recordings of Gerald Finzi’s two greatest works, originally issued separately on LP, and to have them together is bounty indeed. The Cello Concerto was in many ways the composer’s swansong, written at the end of his life when he was terminally ill. The beautiful slow movement is deeply searching and draws on an Elgarian quality, a poignant nobility. Yo-Yo Ma’s wistfully introspective approach – this was his debut recording – captures its gentle intensity and Vernon Handley proves an inspired partner, particularly in the central movement with its exquisite opening and close where Ma often provides a mere thread of tone. Raphael Wallfisch on Chandos (10/86R) is more outgoing, more romantic, and he too has Handley’s understanding partnership. Yet some listeners may respond to Ma’s engaging lightness of rhythmic touch in the finale. The Chandos coupling is the Cello Concertoof Kenneth Leighton, so this Lyrita issue is indispensable. There are many recordings of the gorgeous Clarinet Concerto (which ought to be as familiar in the concert hall as the Mozart) but John Denman’s account is as seductive as any; again Handley is a superbly understanding partner. The Lyrita recordings from the late 1970s are of finest analogue quality, spacious, brilliant, naturally balanced and admirably remastered for CD. The orchestral string tone is particularly fine. A disc to treasure. https://www.gramophone.co.uk/review/finzi-cello-concerto-clarinet-concerto
