Wilhelm Kempff’s outstanding importance as an interpreter of Beethoven comes across impressively in this previously unpublished live recording, made in 1971. Right from the piano’s very first note, his blend of a relaxed mature style with his own characteristic improvisatory freedom and spontaneity fascinates and captivates orchestral players, conductor and audience alike. A second live concert recording, made in the previous year, shows Maazel and the RSO as sovereign custodians of Haydn’s famous “Surprise Symphony”, composed in London. In this performance Maazel consistently avoids any suggestion of cliché or comfortable, bewigged fustiness. Not least, this recording shows that even a modern, full symphony orchestra is capable of a high standard of ensemble playing, precision and flexibility – essential prerequisites for a performance worthy of Haydn.
