It is unlikely that Bach ever heard (or even expected to hear) it performed in its entirety. Instead, the composer seems to have occupied part of his final years writing a work that was intended to be a summation of his art, a document for future generations, and a supreme personal opportunity to unite his faith in God with his life's work as a musician. This is the first recording of the Mass in B minor to use an all-male choir and soloists as envisaged by the composer: a very exciting release which has already provoked much comment and anticipation.
