The SJO was started by trumpeter Fredrik Norén, who is still the musical director and leadtrumpetplayer with the band. It was meant to be a reherseal band to give freelance jazzmusicians a possibility to play good music. In 1986 the band made it´s debut on Skeppsholmen Jazz and Bluesfestival in Stockholm with american guest Bob Florence. By now the band was a permanent big band with ambitions to work and play firstclass concert jazzmusic. After a few years of activity the band got support from the Swedish National Council For Cultural Affairs. A support they still get on a yearly basis. This has enabled them to play between 10-15 concerts a year, touring all over Sweden, Scandinavia, Europe, South Africa and the USA including famous clubs such as the Village Vanguard in New York and Ronnie Scott´s in London. The guestlist over the years is long and includes : Mel Lewis, Bob Brookmeyer, Hermeto Pasqual, Bob Florence, Bob Mintzer, Phil Wilson, Jim McNeely, Bill Holman, Herb Pomeroy, Dick Oatts, Gary Smulyan, Maria Schneider, Mike Gibbs, Kenny Werner, Carlos Franzetti, Susana Rinaldi, Juan-José Mosalini, Jens Winther, Joe Lovano, Norma Winstone, Steve Gray, Pete King, Stan Tracey, Mike Mower, Nils Landgren, Monica Zetterlund, Rigmor Gustafsson, Jeanette Lindström, Claes Janson, Erik Steen Flamenco Fusion and others. In the last years the band has recorded and performed the music of it´s pianoplayer, Göran Strandberg. Over the years quite a few of the best jazzmusicians in Sweden has worked with the band. Today the band sounds better than ever and consists of some of the best young jazzplayers in Sweden and some more experienced “longtimers”. The bands aim is to play modern swingin jazzmusic rooted in the tradition even though projects like “Big Band Flamenco Fusion”,”Tribute to Jaco Pastorius” and “ Tango” has been highly succesful . Since the debut in 1986 the band has broadcasted numerous radioprograms, recorded 9 CD:s, one vinylalbum and more is to come.
