According to the scholars Jenkins and Churgin, who are to be credited withthe commendable work of having compiled the catalogue of the orchestraland vocal works of Giovanni Battista Sammartini, some twenty Sammartinisymphonies belong to a first period of creation: 1724-1739. Nine of theseare presented here, as an integral part of a more extensive projectwhich will propose the entire repertoire of Sammartini's symphonicwriting from its origins to about 1760. Active in Milan as a maestro di cappella in several churches, esteemed bylocal aristocrats who entrusted him with specific charges, appreciated byforeign visitors (Burney, Rousseau, Quantz, Leopold Mozart), GiovanniBattista Sammartini delighted in experimenting with new solutions in theform of the symphony, at that time still not well defined, and undoubtedlyoffered a decisive contribution to determining its scoring and contents as wellas to the identification and treatment of individual timbres. - Giovanni Battista Sammartini is considered the first great symphony composer of the european musical history. - Some of his Symphonies are available as first recording on CD. -The Orchestra Da Camera Milano Classica has collected Sammartini's heritage of the milanese symphonic tradition. - Roberto Gini is specialised in Sammartini's symphonies.
