Ravel's lyrical fantasy L'Enfant et les Sortil'ges tells the tale of a naughty child who has been banished to his nursery by his mother and consequently vents his fury against the furniture, various household objects and even against pet animals. The ill-treated armchair, grandfather clock, school books, Wedgewood teapot and china cup lament their fate and conspire to take revenge on the wicked boy while the equally badly treated animals gather to fight their tormentor. After a dramatic climax, things take a happier turn as the child - now thoroughly chastened - turns over a new leaf. .Rarely performed due to the obvious difficulties in its staging, this work is not only one of Ravel's greatest masterpieces thanks to its excellent musical qualities but is a work against which all 20th-century operas can be measured. Ansermet and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande offer a splendid performance in this DECCA recording which was made at the beginning of the stereophonic era. His sensitive reading of the filigree score, the expressive singing and a brilliant rendering of the rich scoring - together with excellent acoustic conditions - make this recording a true work of reference.
