In his memoirs Beniamino Gigli recalls that Puccini’s des Grieux role was one of those he loved the most and found most comfortable to sing, feeling very much at ease as the unhappy lover of Manon Lescaut. In December 1950 Gigli recorded at Milan’s RAI a memorable version of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, in which he was a protagonist together with the excellent Adriana Guerrini. Of that recording, which was believed completely lost, some highlights have survived, of exceptional musical interest. Here they are, for the first time on CD. A remarkable musical and artistic document, a must for lovers of opera.
