None who were there will ever forget guitarist entertainer Bola Sete's debut at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1962. He was sensational, turning a huge jazz crowd into a bunch of Brazilian music fans in a few minutes time. Bola Sete died on Valentine's Day, 1987, he was 63 years old. In the 25 years since his 1962 debut he played extensively (especially in the San Francisco area), and became well known to younger �rock' fans. He was often on the "Fillmore Auditorium" shows, but gradually drifted into relative obscurity. His guitar work was particularly admired by John Fahey and George Winston. A guitarist original with overwhelming power and command of his instrument, there are very few jazz musicians of any style or era whose appeal is such that it is safe to recommend them to anyone. Bola Sete is such a musician. When he played, he seemed to embrace his guitar, to fondle it. He drew out of the instrument all the sounds he imagined. A night listening to Sete is exhilarating, and marvelously entertaining.
