Benjamin Herman, leader of the New Cool Collective releases Heterogeneity as his 5th solo jazz album on A-Records According to the dictionary Heterogeneity, the title of Benjamin Herman's most recent CD, means: the quality of being diverse and not comparable in any kind - a description that applies to both Benjamin himself and his music. Herman, who is always impeccably dressed - in 2003 he was nominated for the best dressed man in the Netherlands -, is an all-round musician: he is adventurous and versatile. He plays with his popular New Cool Collective Big Band as well as with, for example, the pianist Misha Mengelberg as on this record. In Allaboutcat he is accompanied by the famous Belgian trumpet player Bert Joris. Benjamin Herman was twelve when he started playing saxophone and was already performing professionally at the age of thirteen. He has toured with large and small combos in the United States, Japan, Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, South Africa and Russia, as well as appearing frequently at North Sea Jazz Festival. At 21 he received the Wessel Ilcken prize for best young jazz musician of the year. After which he was invited to take part in the 1991 Thelonious Monk Competition, along with Joshua Redman, Chris Potter and Eric Alexander. After graduating with honours at Hilversum Conservatory he studied with Dick Oatts at Manhattan School of Music in New York. By 25 Benjamin had worked with almost every respected group and musician in the Netherlands, and had started initiating his own projects. Benjamin Herman Trio Earlier recordings Cafe Alto and Benjamin Herman Plays Mengelberg were followed in 2002 by the trio’s latest album, Benjamin Herman plays Jaki Byard. Benjamin invited rising French pianist Pierre Christophe to join the trio for this record. A former fellow student of Benjamin’s at the Manhattan School of Music, Pierre had studied under Byard in the 1990s. It was after completing a ten-day tour of the Netherlands with Pierre last year, that Benjamin suggested they record some of Byard’s music in the studio. In het fotoboekje van zijn nieuwste cd Heterogeneity laat hij niet onvermeld dat hij is genomineerd voor de 'Best geklede man'. Hermans trekt zich niets aan van de ongeschreven wetten van de jazz. Aan smoezeligheid op het podium met muzikanten in verfomfaaide pakken, doet hij niet. Jazz ziet er bij Hermans spik en span uit, zijn hoesjes zijn altijd stijlvol, zijn voorkomen smaakvol tot en met. Bij Hermans is het, zoals bij sommige piepknorjazz, zeker ook niet verboden te genieten van zijn muziek. Hij doet niet geforceerd zijn best, anders te klinken, en zich keihard tegen alle vormen van commercie af te zetten. Hij klinkt van zichzelf al anders, namelijk altijd fit. Je hoort simpelweg dat hij als een sporter zijn conditie op peil houdt. Zijn saxofoonspel is sprankelend, vitaal en levenslustig. De energie deelt hij met zijn gastmuzikanten. Pianist Misha Mengelberg maakt een zeer geïnspireerde indruk in zijn soli, drummer Joost van Schaik is onophoudelijk op dreef met verrukkelijk lichtvoetige dansritmes en de duetten die Hermans met trompettisten Bert Joris en Raynald Colom speelt, zijn erg mooi van contrast en harmonie.
