Emil Gilels (1916-1985) has been a leading light of the extraordinary Russian piano school. He was capable to reach an astonishing bravura performance with amazing exuberance. A very good performer of Beethoven’s sonatas, Gilels was outstanding also in the Russian repertoire. Along with the famous Concert no.1 in B flat minor he often proposed also the less celebrated Concert no.2 in G major. That’s exactly what is featuring our CD with two live recordings from the 1959 Turin and Leningrad performances. In both of them his magnetic force and the power of his music sound interpretation become strongly evident. They’re creating a music document of monumental grandeur and which can be doubtless considered a milestone in the discography of this two compositions.
