Walory brzmieniowe klasy Living Stereo
Artistic Quality: 9 Sound Quality: 9 In the insane ’80s and early ’90s Leonard Slatkin and St. Louis were making so many recordings for RCA that it was difficult to keep track, let alone pay them much attention, but quite a few were excellent. This was one of the best, a marvelously played, richly recorded, taut interpretation of a symphony that has suffered many mediocre performances. In particular, Slatkin never makes the mistake of taking the first movement or the passacaglia (fourth movement) too slowly. His toccata has plenty of virtuosity and excitement, and the climaxes in the outer movements are as overwhelming as they must be while preserving an uncommon degree of clarity and internal balance. Adding to the attractions of this reissue is the presence of Temirkanov’s nice, loud Festive Overture. Haitink (on Decca) offers a very similar performance with even more lustrous playing from the Concertgebouw, which is why I list it as a “reference recording” above, but you may have trouble finding it singly. However, if that particular combination of intensity and musicality is what you want in this music (and it should be), then you can buy this disc with total confidence that you’re getting a first-class interpretation.
