Often labelled as a "romantic-impressionist", Respighi's professional life reflected the principles proclaimed in the 1932 manifesto. He firmly believed that "a real creative artist" could still work within the boundaries of tonal language. Respighi also refused to dabble in the scholasticism that was the vogue with many contemporary composers. . . . Unlike the narrow compositional language of Stravinsky's and Schoenbergs' followers, Respighi's idiom is pleasantly, even lusciously, eclectic. Though a well-travelled, cultured man, he remained at heart very simple. His admittedly conservative style exhibits an elegant humanity that shows the composer not so much a thinker as an avid observer. - J. Knighten Smit
