Musica Antica
INFORMATION ”Glory of the little Reno [River]”; ”the most learned of all the maestri di cappella at the illustrious collegiate church of San Petronio”; ”prince and duke of all orchestras”: this is the portrait of Giacomo Antonio Perti in the words of his contemporaries. Born to a well-to-do family in 1661, this most illustrious of Bolognese composers was given a sound humanistic schooling by the Jesuits at Santa Lucia and applied himself to music under the guidance of his uncle Lorenzo Perti and of Petronio Franceschini, and soon went on to master the most refined techniques of counterpoint thanks to the teaching of Giuseppe Corsi Celano, Carissimi’s beloved pupil. After a brilliant start to his career, linked to the success of his music dramas and cantatas, his consecration as ecclesiastical composer came about with his appointment as maestro di cappella at the cathedral of San Pietro (1690) and at the collegiate church of San Petronio (1696). Affable and calm by nature, though with a tendency to hypochondria, Perti was to stay at San Petronio for almost sixty years, not without adding further similar posts in other churches and city confraternities; he died in 1756, when he was still active and full of creativity, having reaped the praise of princes, emperors and popes, and with a proud host of pupils of the calibre Torrelli, Martini and Aldrovandini, leaving hundreds of scores witnessing almost a century of musical production. In the context of this production the concerted Mass for twelve voices in three choirs undoubtedly represents one of the most striking examples in terms of its grand conception and wealth of technical-musical resources; these features, as well as the monumental proportions of the ensemble, match the solemnity of the occasion for which the work was composed, the feast of Saint Anthony, patron saint of the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna, celebrated annually by its associates.
