The three composers represented on this recording made a decisive contribution, each in his own way, to the consolidation of Latin American music's modern identity. Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940), consciously avoiding the use of folk or popular materials, created music that is unmistakably Mexican, full of energy and strongly expressive. Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983), having started his illustrious career deeply rooted in nationalist ideals, evolved onto a composer of universal appeal, without losing sight of his origins. And Julián Orbón (1925-1991), a monumental figure in this continent's musical history, achieved in his works a remarkable blend of European and Latin American elements, of archaic gestures and modern procedures, thus creating an integrated yet highly personal language, richly enhanced by its diverse influences. - Juan Arturo Brennan
