On 29th October 1956, on the two-hundredth anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birth, Karl BÖhm, one of the most renowned Mozart interpreters of the 19th century, gave a commemorative recital at the Hamburg Radio in which he played Mozart’s delightful Symphony No. 34 as well as one of the most important works by another beloved Austrian composer, Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 9. The present CD, with excellent sound quality, re-proposes the integral recording of that recital, in which BÖhm, with subtle artistry, underlined the many elements that Mozart’s and Schubert’s music have in common, those Austrian language traits that run deep in the music of both authors.
