Together with Guillaume Lekeu, Joseph Jongen (1873-1953) is problably the most important Belgian composer to have followed the æsthetic stream of Franck and d'Indy, embroidering his language with strong debussystic details. His refined and subtle art is a mixture of romantic inspiration and impressionist graces, and really deserves a better diffusion. Here is a first example for Cypres in sight of the Jongen year, celebrated in 2003. The remarkable Arpæ Ensemble revives the famous "Quintette instrumental de Paris", that gave so much first performances in the 20's and 30's, thanks to the activity of his prestigious founders and members Le Roy, Grandjany and Jamet. Two under the composer's most beautiful masterworks are here the alpha and the omega of the programme, enclosing two absolutely unknown works and the irresistibly seductive Danse lente.
