The bansri, a bamboo flute, is one of the most ancient of Indian musical instruments and one of the three major instruments mentioned in Vedic literature of the first millenium BC. From the twelfth century onwards it went into decline and was reintroduced in the twentieth century by Pannalal Ghosh. The bansri itself is a sideblown flute made from a single section of bamboo approximately one inch in diameter.
