Spain and France have much in common from a musical point of view, as is brought to our ears in this recording with Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and the New Philharmonia Orchestra. On the one hand numerous French composers, among them Ravel, were inspired again and again by the exotic, Spanish folklore and culture, while on the other hand Spanish composers such as Albéniz, Falla, Granados, Rodrigo and Turina lived and studied in Paris. The most amazing thing about Ravel's "Spanish" compositions is that he did not incorporate any authentic Spanish folk melodies in his works but still captured the soul of Spanish music. Just how genially he managed to produce the characteristic sound of Spain can best be heard in his Alborada del gracioso, a veritable fireworks display in music! The elegiac Pavane is in quite a different vein; here Ravel is thinking of a young princess as painted by Velásquez. The Spaniard Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos is in his element here, whether conducting the dazzling Intermezzo from Granados's opera Goyescas, or Falla's ballet music El Amor Brujo, which has become widely known thanks to numerous arrangements. This music is as full-bodied and passionate as a glass of sun-kissed Rioja wine.
