Albinoni: Concerti a cinque Op. 7, Parte prima Simone Bensi (oboe) Symphonia Perusina, Paolo Pollastri (oboe/conductor) This second oeuvre was dedicated to Count Maria Rossi di San Secondo, a descendent of the Parma dynasty of the marquises of San Secondo, and the third child born to Scipione di Federigo and Maria Rangone. Already in their formal structure, these sonatas follow in the footsteps of Corelli. The collection consists of 11 sonatas plus a Chiaccona. The sonatas, clearly based on dance forms, are for the most part subdivided into four movements (with the exception of the third and sixth sonatas, which are tripartite). Corelli’s classical stamp emanates from each single movement of each sonata, proving that Caldara had not only assimilated but indeed surpassed his master’s teachings. It is probably thanks to this opus that Caldara obtained on 31 May 1699 the nomination as maestro di cappella of both the church and theater of the duke of Mantua. The decree of his appointment recognized his great virtues in the profession of counterpoint, singing music and playing not only the harpsichord but also “diverse sorts of instruments”.
