IDIS has already shown a particular interest in the live recordings of Maria Callas, choosing those that are rarer and more precious. After Trieste’s Norma and Florence’s Medea - both dating from 1953 - it is now the turn of one of Callas’s best performances: Bellini’s Puritani sung with Giuseppe Di Stefano in Mexico City in May 1952. The great soprano would interpret the role of Elvira many other times, but never with such superb vocal means as she possessed then: this recording is therefore one of her discographic apexes, at least as far as Bellini’s repertoire is concerned. The new digital re-mastering, moreover, restores sound quality to this recording, which, up to now, was known to music lovers only through rather mediocre LP and CD versions.
