A fine performance with Regine Crespin's lovely Elsa, and an excellent supporting cast including the rarely heard Sandor Konya's Lohengrin. This is supplemented by excerpts from three other performances with cast members including Konya, Milnes, Elisabeth Grummer, and Martina Arroyo as well as conducting by Karl Bohm.

Jeff Roberts 5.0 out of 5 starsWonderful souvenir of a classic performance February 16, 2010 Sandor Konya was a great Lohengrin. He recorded the performance commercially for RCA and while his performance on that recording was commendable, his colleagues left something to be desired. Here, however, we get Konya paired with Regine Crespin as an almost ideal Elsa, and with good support from the rest of the cast. Konya is in excellent voice and gives a beautiful performance. Crespin is also in fine form, regal and womanly. Baritone Walter Cassel is a fine, brooding Telramund with a steady voice and crisp German diction, very effective in his long Act 2 scene with Ortrud. Nell Rankin as Ortrud sings well but is missing the degree of malevolence that really sets apart a great Ortrud like Margarete Klose or Astrid Varnay. Bass Ernst Wiemann is a solid but slightly bland King Henry. Joseph Rosenstock leads a brisk performance. As a bonus, the listener gets excerpts of three other Lohengrins with Konya from New York in the 'sixties featuring different Elsas. The "other" Elsas are Ingrid Bjoner, Martina Arroyo and Elisabeth Grummer, all appreciable artists. Sound quality is excellent, probably derived from broadcast recordings. Recommended.
