Bach's music has always been at the center of the transcription industry, to a degree that no other composer - not Mozart or Beethoven, Schubert or Brahms - can claim. And why are musicians so tempted to transcribe Bach's music? Because they can. Bach's musical ideas and musical style are so remarkably malleable that they can accommodate many instrumental options, rendering historical questions of instrumentation moot. It is an old saw that Bach's music is "abstract" or "idealistic," primarily structual and only secondarily sonorus, and therefore eminently transcribable. - Kevin Bazzana
