The legendary Japanese jazz musician Sadao Watanabe first recorded I'm Old Fashioned with the formidable Great Jazz Trio -- Hank Jones, Ron Carter and Tony Williams -- in May, 1975. Exactly one year later, they met again to record Bird Of Paradise.
Although he would go on to do his "bossa nova" and "fusion" thing later on, Watanabe is first and foremost a bebop alto saxophonist who idolized Charlie Parker. This album, of course, is a tribute to the alto giant, and the program consists of tunes written by or strongly associated with Parker.
This wonderful, bop-drenched session is characterized by Watanabe's assertive alto, Jones' stable presence, Carter's dexterous bass lines, and Williams' explosive drumming. Originally recorded by David Baker in 1977, this XRCD24 reissue achieves a surprisingly high level of fidelity: The clarity, the dynamics, and the analog-like "presence" or palpability is quite stunning.
Produced by Kiyoshi Itoh. Recorded by David Baker at Vanguard Studio, NYC, on March 4, 1977. XRCD24 mastering by MHiromichi Takiguchi. This XRCD24 CD was released by JVC Japan in November, 2003.
