Here is the legendary Magda Olivero in a 1979 tour performance with Luciano Pavarotti and Cornell MacNeil in what became their signature roles in the late '70's. This complete performance is supplemented by highlights from Olivero's debut on April 3, 1975 with James King in a rare appearance in an Italian role and Ingvar Wixell. There are also some bonus tracks of Olivero in a "Tosca" from Verona in July 1962 with Flaviano Labo and Tito Gobbi. *** Thomas M. Hines 5.0 out of 5 stars The principals are all in excellent voice: Leonard Warren's sonorous March 27, 2015 This version of Tosca (one of many on the market) has seen several remasterings both in LP and digital format. One of the first "stereo" recordings of its generation (1957). The principals are all in excellent voice: Leonard Warren's sonorous, rich baritone portrays a Scarpia whose lust and obsession with revenge make him the embodiment of evil; Bjorling's characterization of Cavaradossi is highly credible, both tender and laden wiith anguish at the end. Milanov, although just past her prime, is still dramatically appealing and convincing in her role. Leinsdorff leads the orchestra with sensitivity and depth. Uranus has improved the separation of orchestra and voice, although the orchestral background does at times override the singers. If you are curious about these great artists of the past, this would be a good introduction to their art and vocal brilliance. You might consider turning up the volume somewhat for full stereo effect. Highly recommended.
