It is difficult to imagine, for Verdi’s Falstaff, a better cast than the one of this sensational 1949 Metropolitan production. It is like a bravura contest among interpreters of extraordinary skill, each of them giving his or her best. And then there is Fritz Reiner’s conducting: modern and unconventional, tense, vibrant, extraordinarily lively and pressing. A memorable music event and a double CD not to be missed.
