The opera chosen to open the La Scala season on 7th December 1954 was another one of those little-known masterpieces of early 19th-century theatre which Maria Callas decided to bring to success: La Vestale by Gaspare Spontini. The expert Antonino Votto conducted an exceptional vocal cast, which included a stentorian Franco Corelli as Licinio, Eve Stignani as the Gran Vestale, the excellent Enzo Sordelo as Cinna and Nicola Rossi Lemeni as the High Priest. An unforgettable double-CD set documenting a milestone of 20th-century opera.
