Wonderful performances in the grand style. Miss Haendel brings to those evergreen works a mixture of youthful spontaneity (she was 66 when the recoridng was made , but she is one of these people who manage to stay 18 forever ! ) and unique wisdom and authority of a great musician. Highly recommended to those who, like me, are allergic to scratchy "period" performances. (Mark Goldenberg) This has become one of my most beloved recordings. I am no authority on Bach, nor anything musical for that matter. But I have listened with care to probably hundreds of performances of classical music, live and recorded, and I do not remember any so arresting and cutting straight to the deep in me as these. Haendel not only forever changed my view of Bach with this recording, she conveyed to me an understanding, which I cannot articulate, of the violin's unique capacity for expressing passionate human feeling. It bothers me, particularly considering her age, that she does not seem to be very well known. (There is apparently some confusion about her birth date. According to liner notes on another CD that I have of her--Brahms and Tchaikovsky concertos in D, Sergiu Celibidache conducting the LSO, Testament SBT 1038, also highly recommended--it seems she might have been as old as 71 at the time of this recording.)
